About Me

The Lowdown: some facts about me, in no particular order

– I am of ’78 vintage, married to a lovely IT dude, mother of two young girls (born ’08 and ’12) and servant to one almost-geriatric cat.

Living in Sydney, Australia (I’ve been here for 20 years now!) in a privately rented 4 bedroom house. Living near Jervis Bay (NSW South Coast) in my husband’s Nan’s house, next door to my in-laws. I grew up in rural NSW beforehand.

– Full-time housewife, although the financial strain is getting really old so I’m exploring options for working from home. I’m not 100% happy about this.

– I have mild clinical depression that can be managed fairly well through diet and exercise that I’m managing with medication along with diet and exercise.

– My diet isn’t too bad, but I tend to shun exercise, which isn’t a great idea (see above point). Thankfully I never bothered getting a driver’s license (yay Sydney public transport!) so get enough incidental exercise to avoid turning into a complete butterball (I am working towards a license now, however – boo lack of public transport in the country!). Diabetes is rife in both sides of my family though – and I had gestational diabetes through both pregnancies – so I definitely need to lift my game here!

– I have a Bachelor Degree in Music and attempted a Masters in Musicology that dragged on waaaay longer than either the university or I should have ever tolerated before we silently parted ways (Hooray for our “socialist” education funding systems here in Australia! I’m sorry for being the worst stereotype of no good moocher! I promise I’ll pay it all back! Eventually…).

– I have an awesome mix of hoarding tendencies and perfectionism-induced messiness so really don’t make the most of all the space we have.

– I’ve always been awful at multi-tasking but my brain will automatically throw up multiple options whenever a choice has to be made and then proceed to meltdown and go into “freeze” mode from the stress. On the plus side I’m pretty good at looking at the big picture and seeing connections and possibilities that others miss. On the minus side as soon as I have to chunk things down and actually take any actions I stress too much about doing things the “best” way and, again, freeze up (generally in a foetal position under a table somewhere if at all possible).

– I’m a compulsive researcher who hoards notes and links and books and snippets of interesting information but with no system to organise or make use of it all.

– I’m a big fan of handicrafts, especially crochet and embroidery, with an unruly, ever-expanding stash of supplies to go along with it.

– I’m a left-leaning, environmentally conscious, feminist, atheist, wannabe-crunchy mama, but I’m not dogmatic about any of it and strongly believe in the idea of live and let live. If you ask for my opinion I won’t hold back but I’m all about diplomacy and tolerance wherever possible (though if you’d met me ten years ago that would’ve been a different story…)

Everything else you need to know about me is pretty much summed up in Allie Brosh’s classic blog, This is Why I’ll Never Be an Adult. If you can relate to that even a little bit then we’re going to get along just fine.
