Help a blogger out?

We’ve been hit by a few unexpected expenses and debts lately (as my husband sarcastically put it: we adult well!). I really need to find a way to bring in some money, preferably from home and in such a way that I don’t need to rely on child care.

My ideal would be to break into freelance editing/proof reading. I really enjoy doing it, but the few leads I’ve chased up so far haven’t amounted to anything concrete. Any tips? Anyone here got writing they want proofed and polished? I’m happy to start out cheap if you’re ok to let me sample some of your work for a portfolio (or even if you’re not ok to do that. It’s all experience).

Alternatively, has anyone got a site they need extra content for? I can write to a topic and word limit and love researching new information.

Finally, anyone here a professional writer/editor who would like to take me under their wing?? I don’t really have the money for courses, or freedom to work business hours, or acumen to start-up on my own! It would be so awesome to have a mentor so I can learn on the ropes. *sighs wistfully*

  1. I work as a writer/editor and when I first started out, I posted an ad on Craigslist. I have no idea how big Craigslist is where you are, but that or another site like it might work. I can email you my ad so you can get an idea of what you might want to say. I have lots of other advice if you want to hear it. Just let me know at

    1. Ahahah… yeah… Did that a little while ago (posted about it, actually – but it’s past my bedtime so I’m too tired to dig up the link at the mo) and made a grand total of $33. w00t! w00t!

      We’ll sort something out, I’m sure. πŸ™‚

      1. I was thinking I could maybe offer a service to help them *after* they get an essay back – go over the marker’s comments with them and show them how to tighten things up for next time. Not sure how popular that would be though.

      2. Oh yes, I realise that. πŸ™‚ I just used to mark essays and often things like grammar and presentation will affect the final result so I think I’d find it hard to draw the line between polishing their work and actively improving their marks for them. It would be a grey area for me.
